EXPERIENCE JAIPUR WITH COUCH SURFING

Couchsurfing , an international travel community founded to help travellers explore new locales by staying with a host, is catching on in a big way. Couchsurfing refers to the practice of moving from one friend’s place to another, sleeping in whatever space is available, and generally staying a few days before moving onto another place. The objective of Couch-surfing is to create a world where people can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. This appreciation of diversity spreads tolerance and creates a global community.

Taking up an expensive tour package, and exploring new locations with the help of a tour guide may soon become a thing of the past. All you need to do is exchange a few e-mails with people who are willing to host you, look at pictures of their couch, mutually agree on the duration of the trip, and you have yourself a home-stay, and a guide.

An international travel community which offers hospitality exchange and social networking services all over the world has redefined the travel experience, giving people some unforgettable experiences, and helping them make friends for life. With over 7 million active members all over the world, and 80 members in the city, this travel community is already becoming the talk of the town, with new members joining in every day. “I have been Couchsurfing for a year now, and have had some really memorable experiences,” says Sharada Balasubramanian, freelance writer and extensive traveller. “I have ‘Couchsurfed’ in places like Jaipur and Malaysia, and have been taken to places you wouldn’t even see on your travel channels,” she adds.

An added feature of this form of travelling is that there is no money exchanged, except for compensation of incurred expenses, like food. While hospitality and cultural exchanges are the key motives of couchsurfing, they are firm in the fact that they don’t encourage freeloaders. “The entire objective is to give travelers and backpackers a homely experience, while at the same time exposing them to the local culture, cuisines and traditions through the host. Profiles of guests are thoroughly verified and all conditions discussed before we agree on hosting them,” Sharada stresses. Sharada has hosted a Russian from the USA, cooked traditional South Indian food and taken him to locations around South India.

The word-of-mouth publicity and the testimonials posted by the guests about their hosts increases their credibility. “We like to host as many people as possible when we are in town, and normally have one guest every month. We have gone on really exciting trips to Italy, Greece and Turkey, being hosted by locals, and return the same hospitality when they visit us. A lot of them have left some really positive comments about their experience on our forum,” says Jigna Kapasi, another active Couch surfer.

Jigna and her husband Umang have hosted over 40 guests from all over the world. “While it is still catching up in Coimbatore, Couchsurfing is already a rage in bigger cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, where they form groups based on their specific interests. For example, Pune has a cycling club whose members meet through Couchsurfing and decide the location they will cycle to each week,” Umang Kapasi, a Couchsurfer for the last five years, points out.

This initiative has also broadened the outlook of many people, who have made life-long friends with total strangers from different continents. “I have shared our Bollywood tunes with a Brazilian, who expressed a keen interest in listening to Indian music, and have exchanged several e-mails with him since. Though I have never met him in person, this has turned out to be a great platform to bond with people who share similar interests, and make great friends in the process,” Jigna says.

With meetings held each week to decide on their future travels and activities, and people from different walks of life attending those meetings, it sure does look like the city’s youngsters are giving vent to their wanderlust, replete with homestays and various locations around the world to add that personal touch.
